The founder of the Presentation Sisters, Nano Nagle was the forerunner of a band of strong women of faith whose particular ethos and charism guide our school today. An explicit Christian ethos guides our every action and nurtures our every child towards a balance between her life and all creation.
The life of Jesus Christ, Gospel values and sound Christian principles, underpinned by Catholic doctrine, provide the structure and the special dimension which sets St Mary’s College apart.
We take every opportunity to gather together as a whole school and to celebrate our faith as a community – all students taking a prominent role in these celebrations at some stage in their life at St Mary’s College.
Education is at the centre of significant changes in the world of our children. Every day, in every way, they are confronted by constant shifts and changes in technology, socialisation, globalisation and learning theory.
This is all the more reason for the Catholic school to maintain its identity and integrity as a place where values and goals do not shift, because the promotion of the human person is its overarching goal.

Operating within the Presentation charism, our vision is that St Mary’s College offers a dynamic environment in which young people are able to fulfil their spiritual, academic and personal potential.

In a world of constant change, we the community strive to live the teachings of Jesus Christ within the Tradition of the Catholic Church, developing just and compassionate people who are resilient, responsible and informed, and ready to commit to society.

The Presentation values of respect, responsibility, relationships and resilience are the cornerstone on which we build our vision and underpin all that we do at St Mary’s College, along with the touchstones of hospitality, compassion and simplicity.

- We commit ourselves to the person and teachings of Jesus Christ.
- We strive to provide a sound Catholic education for our students, to enable and empower them to take their places in society with pride and dignity.
- We promote and develop the full potential and integrity of each individual in our community, respecting and celebrating individual differences.
- We seek to continue the Presentation Charism of hearing the cry of those made poor, and then cry of the Earth, as exemplified in the life of Nano Nagle.
- We provide strong role models who attempt to demonstrate leadership in applying Christian values to contemporary issues in education, care of the environment and social issues.
- We welcome the participation of parents in the planning and development of their children’s education.
Pastoral care
At St Mary’s we believe that the basis of a good school is good pastoral care, and we take this aspect of education very seriously. The Director of Senior School and the House Leaders, working with committed teams of Pastoral Care teachers, are pivotal to the health and happiness of the student body. We acknowledge that learning only takes place in an environment where the learner feels comfortable, so helping students to achieve an optimum degree of comfort in school is a priority.
Another important goal is the idea of connectedness. We encourage the idea of working closely with parents as partners in their daughter’s education, and as we care for our students, we offer support to their parents.
We are continually reviewing our policies and procedures to make sure that we are providing the best possible learning environment, and believe that we are giving our students opportunities to grow in confidence.
We also believe that a large helping of fun is important, and we aim to give students the chance to enjoy themselves.
Access to SchoolTV provides our College community, including students with access to reliable and useful information in an easily accessible format.
Archbishop’s Charter
The Archbishop’s Charter for Catholic Schools is used to guide everybody involved with Catholic schools and colleges, and will offer reassurance to parents of students attending our Catholic schools and colleges.
It draws inspiration from the philosophy and vision expressed in the Catholic Education Tasmania Commission’s Vision and Mission Statement. The Commission acknowledges Catholic schools as communities of faith; Learning for life.
